The brothers Pat and Hank Olivieri, two 1930s street vendors, created the iconic Philly Cheesesteak. Pat grew tired of eating from the limited menu they sold and brought a ribeye to the cart to whip up something a little different. The vendor cooked the steak along with a few onions before placing it on a toasted bun.

The aroma attracted the interest of a nearby customer. Quickly the duo recognized the potential of the creation and eventually traded in their cart for a shop where the sandwich became the beloved delicacy known today. The Philly Cheesesteak has its fans that demand the sandwich never stray from the original recipe, but most people love to adapt it to meet their tastes.

Make Authentic Philly Cheesesteaks Without Having To Go To Philadelphia

Ingredients

16-ounce ribeye – shaved

2 tablespoons of olive or vegetable oil

½ cup diced green pepper

½ cup diced white onion

 1 cup diced portobello mushrooms

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

Four slices of provolone cheese – cut in half.

½ cup cheddar cheese - shredded

Four long sub/hoagie rolls sliced lengthwise and toasted

Mayo or mustard, if desired.

Directions

Heat oil over medium heat, in a large frying pan, for about 3-5 minutes.

Add the onions and peppers and cook for about three minutes.

Add the mushrooms to the pan and cook the vegetables until the onions begin to become translucent.

Push the vegetables to the side of the pan.

Add the shaved steak and Worcestershire sauce to the frying pan and stir often to ensure the meat cooks evenly on all sides.

Stir in the cheddar cheese immediately before removing the pan from the heat and mix thoroughly with the meat so it will melt.

Note: Cheese Whiz is authentic.

Lay out the toasted buns and add mayonnaise or mustard, if desired.

Place one half-slice of provolone on each bottom bun, add a layer of the green pepper, onion, and mushrooms, then scoop a layer of the meat and cheddar cheese mixture over the vegetables.

Place the other half-slice of provolone over the meat and add the top bun.

Serve immediately.
